The Wizards have had many identities before becoming the Wizards. This is because they had started off their career in Chicago as the Chicago Packers in 1961. Since then they moved a few times and were renamed accordingly.

The team was called the Chicago Packers for their first season. They changed their names to the Chicago Zephyrs in 1962 for that season. The next year they moved to Baltimore, Maryland and they were renamed the Baltimore Bullets. They remained that way from 1963 to 1972. They changed their name yet again when they moved to Landover in Maryland in 1973. They became the Capital Bullets. In the 1974 season, they chose to rename themselves the Washington Bullets and were known by that name till 1997. There was some controversy with the name as it had violent connotations to it so there was a contest held to choose a new name for the team. The choices were narrowed down to Express, Dragons, Sea Dogs, Wizards and Stallions. Eventually, the name Wizards was chosen. This new name was not without controversy either as the “Wizard” was a position in the Ku Klux Klan.

The NBA Championship

The team won their only NBA championship as the Washington Bullets. Under head coach Dick Motta, the team made the playoffs in 1978. They went through the playoffs and reached the NBA Finals against the Seattle Supersonics. With players like Wes Unseld and Elvin Hayes in the team, who went on to be hall of famers, the Bullets beat the Supersonics to win the NBA Championships.

The 1980’s started off being rather unsuccessful. Most of their good players had left and the team became rather mediocre. In 1986, the Bullets got Moses Malone with whose help they made the playoffs again that season. They lost in the playoffs to the Detroit Pistons.

In 1987, the Bullets had the distinction of having the tallest player and the shortest player in NBA history. Manute Bol was 7’7” tall and Muggsy Bogues was 5’3”. The team made the playoffs again but was defeated by the Detroit Pistons. They would not make the playoffs for another nine years.

In 1999, Michael Jordan of the Chicago Bulls retired from professional basketball and joined the Wizards as their president and also became a minority owner. However, he decided to play for the Wizards in 2000 as he came out of retirement and managed to improve the team’s season record. Jordan left the team when the owner Abe Pollin removed him from the position of team president.

Since the 1970’s, the Wizards have not won any major title but are still a strong team with players like Antawn Jamison, Michael Ruffin and Jarvis Hayes. Under Coach Eddie Jordan, the team is still among the strongest teams in the NBA. Their current home arena is the Verizon Center.
