The Redskins were originally known as the Boston Braves when they joined the National Football League as an expansion team in 1932. Their owner was George Preston Marshall. The next year they changed their name to the Boston Redskins and the same year they moved from the Braves Field to Fenway Park for their home games.

In 1937, Marshall moved the team to Washington because he was not happy with the turnout at Fenway Park. He retained the name Redskins. In its first year in Washington, the Redskins won their first NFL Championship.

The Redskins have won a total of five Conference Championships and twelve Division Championships. They have also won five league championships, two NFL titles and three Super Bowls.

The Super Bowls

The first Super Bowl win of the Washington Redskins was in 1982 and it was their first NFL Championship in forty years. They beat the Miami Dolphins in Pasadena, 27-17. They reached the Super Bowl again the next year but lost to the Oakland Raiders.

The Redskins advanced to the Super Bowl again in 1987, a year that was marked by a players strike of over three weeks. In a game where they started ten points down, the Redskins came back to beat the Denver Broncos, 42-10. Quarterback Doug Williams was noticed for his spectacular performance in this game. He was also the first African-American quarterback to lead his team to a Super Bowl victory.

Their third Super Bowl win came in 1992 in Minneapolis. The Redskins defeated the Buffalo Bills, 37-24. After this victory, the Redskins head coach Joe Gibbs retired after having served the team for twelve years.

The Redskins have played in various home fields in their 75 year career. As the Boston Braves, they played at the Braves Field in 1932 and the following year they moved to Fenway Park where they played for three years. When they relocated to Washington D.C., their home field was the Griffith Stadium from 1937 to 1960. They moved to D.C. Stadium in 1961, which was incidentally renamed the Robert F. Kennedy Stadium in 1969. The Redskins finally moved to the FedEx Stadium where they play all their home games to this day.

The 2006 season was a bit disappointing for the Redskins with the team finishing last in the NFC East Division. A few players have however emerged as players to look out for in future, players who can take back the team to a period of glory. Quarterback Jason Campbell is one such player who is best equipped to lead the team to victory again.
