The Rams were founded in 1936, but were initially known as the Cleveland Rams as they were based in Cleveland. Founded by Homer Marshman an attorney, they were a part of the American Football League. They joined the National Football League the following year to replace the St. Louis Gunners who ceased to exist. During the Second World War, the team did not play in the 1943 season due to shortage of players. They won their first NFL Championship in 1945, their last year in Cleveland.
The next location for the Rams was Los Angeles. They were then called the Los Angeles Rams from 1946 to 1994. Their owner at the time was Dan Reeves who made the move due to unnecessary competition with the Cleveland Browns and inadequate crowds at the Cleveland Stadium. After his death in 1971, the Rams were taken over by Caroll Rosenbloom who was the Baltimore Colts previous owner. He, in turn, relocated the Rams to Anaheim in 1980, as he was not happy with the slow progress in improving the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum.
The Rams had a similar problem in Anaheim as well. Rosenbloom died and his widow took over and she is still co-owner of the team. The Rams were supposed to be given plots of land near the stadium, but this did not materialize. In 1995, owner Georgia Frontiere moved the Rams to St. Louis where they are to this day. They were renamed the St. Louis Rams.
Dick Vermeil was hired as Head Coach in 1997. Under him, the team went on to win the Super Bowl in 1999 against the Tennessee Titans, 23-16. This was their first and only Super Bowl win till date. Vermeil retired after that win. They reached the Super Bowl again in 2001 where they lost to the New England Patriots.
The Rams have also won two NFL Championships, in 1945 and 1951. They have won a total of six Conference Championships and fifteen Division Championships. They are members of the Western Division of the National Football Conference.
The current Head coach is Scott Linehan since January 2006. The Rams are owned by Georgia Frontiere and E. Stanley Kroenke. They play all their home games at the Edward Jones Dome since the second half of the 1995 season. The team’s offense was dubbed “The Greatest Show On Turf” for their seasons from 1999 to 2001, with running back Marshall Faulk, quarterback Kurt Warner, Isaac Bruce and Torry Holt.
The Rams have retired five jersey numbers, #7 Bob Waterfield, #29 Eric Dickerson, 374 Merlin Olsen, #78 Jackie Slater and #85 Jack Youngblood.
