The Blues are a member of the National Hockey League (NHL). They are part of the Western Conference and play in the Central Division. The team was founded in 1967, when the NHL announced its expansion along with five other teams. The Blues was the last expansion team to officially join the league. They were first owned by Sid Salomon Jr., Sid Salomon III, his son, and Robert L. Wolfson. The team was named after the famous song by W. C. Handy called “St. Louis Blues”. They played in the St. Louis Arena till 1994.
The first head coach of the Blues was Lynn Patrick and was replaced very quickly by Scott Bowman. They won the Division Championships in 1969 and 1970, but were beaten in the Conference Finals by the Montreal Canadiens first and the Boston Bruins the next year. The major players in the team in 1970, included Jim Roberts, Phil Goyette, brothers Barclay and Bob Plager, and Gord Berenson. During that time, Salomon was known to be the ultimate player’s owner. He gave cars to his players and gifted them vacations in Florida. The players in return would give their best on the ice in every game.
The team went through some poor years between 1970 and 1977. The team considered filing for bankruptcy and brought the number of staff members to three. In 1977, Salomon sold the team to Ralston Purina, who even changed the name of the arena to “the Checkerdome.” The team’s fortunes improved and in 1980, they made the playoffs. The team featured great players like Wayne Babych, Brian Sutter, Bernie Federko and Mike Luit. Starting in 1980, the team made it to the playoffs in twenty five seasons in a row.
Purina sold the team to Bill Hunter in 1983, who in turn wanted to move the team to Saskatoon. The NHL did not want to lose the market and so the deal fell through. Eventually, Harry Ornest bought the team, kept it in the city, and even renamed the arena back to the St. Louis Arena. Through the 1980’s and 1990’s, the Blues never made it beyond the second round of the playoffs. In 1986, Ornest sold the team to Michael Shanahan. In 1994, the team moved to their new home arena the Kiel Center, which is now known as the Scottrade Center.
Their greatest star was Brett Hull who was given the nickname “The Golden Brett”. In 1990, he scored 86 goals that was the third best scoring record behind the great Wayne Gretzky. In 2001, the Blues managed to reach the Conference Finals, only to lose to the Colorado Avalanche. The Blues have not yet won a Conference or Stanley Cup Championship, but have won seven Division Titles.
