Sports tickets for Major League Baseball (MLB) are normally sold out very quickly in the USA. The finals of the league are known as World Series games. Except for one team from the neighboring Canada, all other teams are from the USA. At present there are 30 teams in the league and 162 games are played in total. The league starts play on the first Sunday of April and lasts till the first Sunday of October, with playoffs being played in October and November.
The Past And Presence Of MLB
Many of the people who buy sports ticket with the click of a mouse today may not be aware of the fact that baseball has been very popular in the USA ever since the 19th century. At that time there was no professionally organized leagues. Players were classified into amateurs and professionals. The incident that paved way for the formation of a professional league was a rift between the amateur and professional players in 1870. After this, the professional players formed a major league called National Association of Professional Baseball Players. Although amateur players also formed a league, they could not survive for too long.
In 1876, a better organized league that focused more on teams rather than players came into existence. It was called the National League of Professional Base Ball Clubs or simply the National League. New rules and regulations regarding player contracts and transfer of players between clubs were introduced. These rules prevented a player from shifting from one club to another, at will. Also playing all the league games was made mandatory. Previously if a team fell out of the title race they preferred to skip the remaining games, often causing chaos in scheduling.
But the going was not very smooth for the league during the early stages. Players were not happy with the restrictions. Sports tickets would not be sold out as they are today. At that time, spectators were allowed to have alcoholic beverages during games, which resulted in the league getting a nickname ‘beer and whiskey league’. Although there were several other baseball leagues, the only one to rival the popularity of the National League was the American League.
The bidding for players for various leagues complicated the issue further. There were frequent attempts – with only occasional and partial success – to streamline the transfer process and general functioning of the leagues with certain rules and regulations. The growing enthusiasm of the fans to buy sports tickets and watch matches from the stadium ensured sufficient financial returns for the leagues. After some time, the small leagues faded out.
The two main leagues, the National league and the American league, have coexisted for over a century. The changes in the rules and equipment have been almost similar in both the leagues. One major exception is what is known as the “designated hitter rule”. In 2000, both leagues were disbanded, and a single major league came into existence.
