In 1967, a rival league was established. Known as American Basketball League, the new league briefly threatened to spoil the fame of the NBA. The challenge of a rival galvanized the organizers of the NBA into rapid action. They began to expand quickly, nullifying the threat posed by the new league. But the new league provided an exciting addition to the game. The three pointer, which swung many games in the last second, was introduced in the ABA.
