The Seahawks are the only team to have switched conferences twice. They joined the NFL in 1976 as an expansion team and started as a member of NFC West Division. After a season, they moved to the AFC West and in 2002 they were back in NFC West.
The Seahawks were founded by a group known as the Seattle Professional Football Inc. who was awarded the franchise by the NFL in 1974. They played their first game on August 1st, 1976 against the San Francisco 49ers.
The Seattle Seahawks have won five division championships in their 11 year career. They won two AFC West Championships in 1988 and 1999. They captured three NFC West Titles in three consecutive years, 2004, 2005 and 2006. They won the NFC Championship once in 2005 and had suffered a loss at the AFC Championship in 1983.
They reached the Super Bowl once in their career where they lost to the Pittsburgh Steelers, 21-10 in 2006. In their short history they managed to achieve a great deal.
Current Staff
The current owner of the Seahawks is Paul Allen who bought the team in 1997 when former owner Ken Behring wanted to move the Seahawks to Southern California. He also invested a lot in the building of the Seahawks current stadium, Qwest Field. The General Manager is Tim Ruskell and Head Coach since 1999 is Mike Holmgren who was the coach for the Green Bay Packers previously. The team colors are Navy Blue, Pacific Blue, Neon Green and White. The Seahawks cheerleading squad is called the Seagals who are the most intensely trained squad in the NFL.
The Seahawks have retired two jersey numbers. An interesting fact is that jersey #12 was retired in honor of the Seahawks fans. As the story goes, the number was retired as a tribute to their noisy fans that made their home field, the Kingdome, the noisiest stadium in the NFL. The second number to be retired is #80 Steve Largent. The permission being granted by Largent, this number was taken out of retirement for a brief part of the 2004 season for Jerry Rice
There are four Seahawks in the Pro Football Hall of Fame, namely Franco Harris inducted in 1990, Steve Largent in 1995, Carl Eller in 2004 and Warren Moon in 2006. The only Seahawk to have received the NFL Most Valuable Player is running back Shaun Alexander who received it in 2006.
