The Chargers started their career as the Los Angeles Chargers when they first started playing in 1960. They were charter members of the American Football League. The Chargers play for the Western Division of the American Football Conference in the National Football League. After just one season in Los Angeles, they relocated to California.

The Chargers are owned by Alex Spanos with George Pernicano as the minority owner with 3% share. Their Head Coach is Norv Turner who joined in 2007. The Chargers are also known by several nicknames such as Bolts, Super Chargers and The Frightening Lightning. Their team colors are Navy Blue, White, Powder Blue and Gold.

The Chargers won an AFL Championship in 1963 before they joined the NFL in 1970 as part of the NFL-AFL merger. Since then they have won the AFC Championship once in 1994, and AFC West Division Championships seven times. They are yet to win the Super Bowl. In 1980, they fell one game short of the Super Bowl by losing to the Oakland Raiders who eventually went on to win that year. They reached the Super Bowl for the first time in 1994 but unfortunately lost to the San Francisco 49ers, 49-26. That was the only time they reached the Super Bowl till date.

Retired Numbers

The Chargers have retired two jersey numbers in honor of their players. One is Lance Alworth #19. He was the wide receiver and played from 1962 to 1970. He played in the AFL era of the Chargers and was considered to be an outstanding player. He was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1977.

The other player is Dan Fouts #14. Fouts was the quarterback in the years 1973 to 1987. He had set an NFL record in 1979 for having four 300 yard passing games in a row. He was also inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1993.

Apart from Alworth and Fouts, the Chargers Hall of Fame included greats like Sid Gillman who was Head Coach from 1961 to 1969 and again in 1971, Charlie Joiner who was the wide receiver 1976 to 1986 and Kellen Winslow who was the tight end from 1979 to 1987.

Their Home Field

The Chargers played in the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum in 1960 when they were based in Los Angeles. After their relocation, their home field was Balboa Stadium from 1961 to 1966. Their current home stadium is the Qualcomm Stadium which has also been known as San Diego Stadium and Jack Murphy Stadium.
