These seats at the stadium have come a long way to being the most-wanted item they are today. Even the Raiders gear has become a bit of a fashion statement nowadays. The team has certainly come a long way from its humble beginnings and today, it is one of the favorite teams in the NFL.

The Oakland Raiders are based in the city of Oakland in California and play their home games from the McAfee Coliseum. They are part of the National Football League and the American Football Conference. Until date, they have four league victories to their name, four conference wins, and a whopping fifteen division titles.

An Unlikely Host

It is interesting to note that, tickets were probably the last thing anyone would ever think to become a reality. In 1959, the scenario was this- the AFL desperately needed an expansion team. Oakland had no ownership group, no stadium and perhaps most important of all, they hadn't even asked for a team. And yet in 1960, Oakland was awarded the franchise. Luckily, local businesses came forward, willing to invest. A contest was held to find a name for the team and Oakland Senors was declared the winner. However, after quickly becoming the butt of a number of jokes and being referred to as the seniors, the name was changed to Raiders.

Now came the task of making those Raiders tickets something that people would want to buy. Things did not go very well in the beginning, as the team could not find a place to play and seemed to heading to financial ruin once again. That all changed in 1963, when a young man called Al Davis came on board. Davis would play a huge role changing the fortunes of the team- he would be with the Raiders till 1981, taking them to two Super Bowl wins and the large majority of their Division victories.

A Pop Icon

Raiders tickets and the team in itself have become so popular that they have entered a number of aspects of today's popular culture. Wearing a Raiders baseball cap or jersey is still regarded as a fashion statement, especially among some hip-hop circles. Raider Nation refers to the large legion of diehard fans, many of which include some top celebrities. The fans are known for creating what is known as the Black Hole- this refers to a section of the home stadium, where the fans are dressed completely in black. These fans are also known for their loud and often rowdy behavior. Some high profile Raiders fans include Carlos Santana, Ice Cube, Tom Hanks, Tiger Woods and Hunter S. Thompson. The heavy metal band Slayer is known for using the Raiders logo on their instruments and equipment.

The Raiders have also made their way into the iconic television show, The Simpsons, and have a poem called Autumnal Wind written about them that is played as an orchestral piece during the games. In the movie, That Thing You Do, one character is named after a Raiders linebacker, since the director of the movie, Tom Hanks, is a Raiders fan.
