The Steelers are the oldest franchise in the American Football League and have appeared in most championships. They have been in thirteen conference championship games and have been the hosts for maximum number of such games in the National Football League. They also have been in six Super Bowls and have the distinction with two others to have won it five times.

A Look At The History Of The Steelers

The team was called the Pittsburgh Pirates when they started with the NFL in 1933. Their owner was Art Rooney Sr. The team was renamed the Steelers in 1940 through a fan contest. This name was chosen due to the steel industry in Pittsburgh.

The first game of the Steelers was in September 1933 when they played against the New York Giants. They lost the game 23-2.

During the Second World War, the Steelers had a problem due to a shortage of players. They merged with the Philadelphia Eagles for the 1946 season and formed the Phil-Pitt Eagles, which was called the Steagles. In 1944, they merged with the Chicago Cardinals to be known as Card-Pit. This team was the only team in the history of the franchise to have a winless season.

The fortune of the Steelers changed in 1969 when they hired Chuck Noll as head coach. He had a knack of drafting the best players. He drafted many players who went on to be in the Hall of Fame such as Joe Greene, Jack Ham, Lynn Swan and Jack Lambert. In fact the 1974 draft went down in history as the best ever for being the only draft with four Hall of Fame players in it.

In 1974, the Steelers won their first Super Bowl. They beat the Minnesota Vikings 16-6. The Steelers in fact were the only team to win four Super Bowls in six years. They won it in 1974, 1975, 1978 and 1979. They were also the first ever to win more than two. In the 1980’s they lost most of their Super Bowl players as they all retired.

Under Coach Bill Cowher who joined in 1992, the Steelers went on to win two Conference Championships, six AFC Central Division Championships and two AFC North Championships. They also won their fifth Super Bowl in 2005 by defeating the Seattle Seahawks 21-10. Cowher retired in January 2007 and was succeeded by Mike Tomlin, the first African-American to be appointed Head coach for the Steelers.

The current owner of the Steelers is Daniel Rooney and their home field from 2001 till date is Heinz Field. They have retired just one jersey number #70 Ernie Stautner.
