1980s was not good for the Pirates. By the middle of 1980s, Pirates came to be regarded as one of the worst teams in National League. After Jim Leyland became the new manager, things began to slowly improve for the Pirates. He added young players like Bobby Bonilla, Barry Bonds, Andy Van Slyke, Jay Bell, Sid Bream, and Jose Lind to the team.

In 1992, Leyland set out to rebuild the team by giving up high-payroll players in return for young players. In 2001, the Pirates got a new home ground, PNC Park.
