Watch the Pirates dominate in the 2008 season with Pirates tickets. Whether they are playing at their home ground or away, they do need their fans cheering them on. The Pirates have won five World Series championships, the last one in 1979.

The Pittsburgh Pirates are based in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. They play in the Central Division of the National League. Their original name was the Pittsburgh Alleghenies. In 1890s, they were known as the Pittsburgh Innocents. By the end of that decade they came to known by their present name- Pittsburgh Pirates. The club was formed in 1876 and in 1882 they joined the American Association as a founding member. In 1887, they switched to National League.

First World Series Championship

In 1903, the Pirates dominated the National League. They faced Boston in the first ever World Series championship. However, they lost it due to injuries to their star pitchers. But this did not stop their fans from buying the Pirates tickets. For the next few years, the Pirates played some amazing games. Then in 1909, they went on to win their first World Series championship.

The Pittsburgh Pirates again rose to prominence in 1970s. In 1970, they won the East Division title. They went on to win four more division titles in the next five years. In 1971, the Pirates won their fourth World Series championships. Clemente Steve Blass, with a .414 Series batting average, was the star pitcher for the Pirates. In 1971, Pirates became the first Major League Baseball team to field an all-black starting line-up. With such great performance, Pirates tickets were always sold out.

1980s was not good for the Pirates. By the middle of 1980s, Pirates came to be regarded as one of the worst teams in National League. After Jim Leyland became the new manager, things began to slowly improve for the Pirates. He added young players like Bobby Bonilla, Barry Bonds, Andy Van Slyke, Jay Bell, Sid Bream, and Jose Lind to the team.

In 1992, Leyland set out to rebuild the team by giving up high-payroll players in return for young players. In 2001, the Pirates got a new home ground, PNC Park. The Pirates have not been doing well in recent years and that shows in the sale of Pirates tickets. Since 1992, Pirates have not had a winning season. For the past fifteen seasons, Pirates have not been able to get a .500 winning percentage. This has been hard for their fans.

Presently the Pirates play their home games at the PNC Park. John Russell is their current manager. PNC Park has the second smallest capacity of all the Major League Baseball stadiums. It has a sitting capacity of around 38,500.
