The San Diego Padres have started training for the new season and Padres tickets are up for sale. Padres fans can look forward to their team playing the first baseball game in China. Padres will be playing against the Los Angeles Dodgers at the Wukesong Stadium. The stadium would be packed with 12,000 Padres and Dodgers fans.

The San Diego Padres play in the Western Division of the National League. Colorado Rockies, Arizona Diamondbacks, Los Angeles Dodgers, and San Francisco Giants are the other teams that play in the Western Division. From 1969 to 2004, the Padres played their home games at the Qualcom Stadium, formerly called the Jack Murphy Stadium. In 2004, they shifted to their new home ground, the PETCO Park.

Some Facts

The San Diego Padres started as a professional baseball team when the league expanded in 1969. Padres came into prominence in 1971 and also saw the sales of Padres tickets going up. In 1971, Clay Kirby burned twenty one San Francisco Giants batters in a row. In 1972, fans witnessed Nate Colbert setting a record of hitting five home runs for 13 RBI’s in one day. In 1975, Randy Jones became the first San Diego Padres pitcher to win twenty games in a season. He won the Cy Young Award that very same year.

New Owner

In 1974, Padres fans were to be disappointed when the club was about to be moved out of San Diego, but Ray Kroc, better known as the founder of Mc Donald, saved the day by buying the team and keeping it in San Diego. Padres fans continued to support the team by buying Padres tickets and by being there to cheer their team on.

Great Padres

1980 turned to be another memorable season for the Padres and the fans who had bought Padres tickets. For the first time in National League history a single team got three Fireman of the Year awards in the same year. Gene Richards, Ozzie Smith and Jerry Mumphrey are the three Padres players who were awarded the Fireman of the Year awards.

In 1984, Ray Kroc passed away and that year Padres made their first appearance in the World Series championship. 1984 is also remembered because Alan Wiggins stole 70 bases to set a franchise record.

As a whole, Padres have had a pretty successful history. They have won five West Division Titles- 1984, 1996, 1998, 2005, and 2006. Even though they have made two World Series appearances, they have not won any. Presently they play their home matches at the PETCO Park. With a sitting capacity of 46,000, PETCO Park is one of the coolest baseball parks in the MLB.

The San Diego Padres are gearing up for the 2008 season after a disappointing 2007 season. Randy Wolf, Mark Prior, and Milton Bradley have been added to the Padres’ roster. They will be playing against Houston Astros and Los Angeles Dodgers in the coming days.
