The National Hockey League is the major professional hockey league consisting of hockey teams from North America, including Canada and U.S.A. There are two conferences in the National Hockey League, the Eastern and the Western Conferences. Each team consists of three divisions with five teams in each division. There are a total of thirty professional hockey teams in the National Hockey League, 24 in U.S.A and 6 in Canada.

Origin Of The National Hockey League

The NHL was started in 1917 in Montreal, Canada with four teams. The NHL had a shaky start, but slowly more teams joined it. In 1918, the first NHL team won the Stanley Cup, the Toronto Arenas. In fact the National Hockey League had seven wins out of the first eight Stanley Cups they appeared in.

By the end of the 1930’s the National Hockey League had ten teams. But due to World War II, there was a shortage of players and the number of teams came down to six in 1942. The real expansion started in the mid 1960’s when a large number of minor leagues proved to be as good as the major league teams. In 1967, the league added its first six expansion teams since 1920. Slowly more teams were added to the National Hockey League roster, the last two being added in 2000.

The regular ice hockey season starts on the first Wednesday of October till the beginning of April. In the regular season, each team plays 82 games. There are points awarded for each game. The National Hockey Leagueis the only major league which even awards a point for a team which loses in overtime. The winners in each division get the Division Championship and the overall winner in the league gets the Presidents Trophy. After the regular season, starting mid April are the playoffs where the teams play each other to advance to the next round. The eventual winner is the Stanley Cup Champion.

The Stanley Cup

The Stanley Cup is the Super Bowl of ice hockey. It is an annual championship which the teams of the National Hockey League fight to win. The first Stanley Cup was awarded in 1892 by Lord Stanley of Preston to the top ranking Canadian hockey team. It became the championship trophy of the National Hockey League in 1926. A new Stanley Cup is not made every year. The winning team keeps it for a year and then it goes to the next Stanley Cup winner. The original Stanley Cup which was just an engraved bowl is kept in the Hockey Hall of Fame in Toronto. Two duplicates were made, one in 1963 that is presented to the winning team and the second in 1993 to replace the original one when it is moved out of the Hall of Fame. The current reigning Stanley Cup Champion is the Carolina Hurricanes.
