The Nassau County officials did not want a WHA team coming into the coliseum and the only way to do that was to get an NHL team there instead. William Shea, who had brought the NY Mets to Long Island earlier managed to convince the NHL President to award a franchise to Long Island. An additional franchise was awarded to Atlanta as well to balance the schedule. The Islanders did not enjoy much success in the initial years. In 1975, they made 32 more points than their previous season. This was a huge turnaround for the team. They had players like Clark Gillies, Bob Nystrom, Billy Smith and Denis Potvin who helped take the team to the playoffs. They lost in the third round to the Philadelphia Flyers who would eventually win the Stanley Cup. In 1979, the team was sold to John O. Pickett. In 1980, the winning streak started for the New York Islanders. They defeated the Philadelphia Flyers to win their first Stanley Cup. Brian Tottier was awarded the Most Valuable Player (MVP). The next year they won the Cup again by beating the Minnesota North Stars. The MVP was awarded to Butch Goring. Their third cup came the very next year when they defeated the Vancouver Canucks in 1982. Mike Bossy was named MVP after scoring the winning goal. They won their fourth consecutive Stanley Cup in 1983 by beating the Edmonton Oilers. The MVP was awarded to Billy Smith. These were the only Stanley Cups they have won so far in their career. In 1988, they won the Atlantic Division title again but lost in the playoffs to the New Jersey Devils. They suffered their first losing season in the 1988-89 season. The next season they made it back to the playoffs but lost to the Rangers. Many unsuccessful years later and after some bad management issues by General Manager Don Maloney, the team was sold to a group led by Steven Gluckstern and Howard Milstein in 1997. In 2000, they sold the team yet again to the current owners Charles Wang and Sanjay Kumar. The Islanders made it back to the playoffs in 2002 and lost in the first round to the Toronto Maple Leafs. The next year they lost in the first round to the Ottawa Senators. The current head coach of the Islanders is Ted Nolan and the captain is Bill Guerin. They are based in Uniondale on Long Island in Nassau County. The team colors are Orange, Dark Blue and White.
