The owners of the Saints are Tom Benson and Rita Benson LeBlanc. The team was founded in 1967 and was named after the famous anthem “When The Saints Go Marching In”. They had a rather dismal start. They had to wait two decades before they had a winning season. The home stadium of the Saints is the Louisiana Superdome since 1975. But because of the devastation caused by Hurricane Katrina, they had to play temporarily at the Tiger Stadium, Alamodome and the Giants Stadium till the Superdome was restored.
The Saints are a member of the Southern Division of the National Football Conference in the National Football League. The team struggled till the 1980’s when they eventually achieved some success. That is when the team made it to the playoffs four times.
The current owner Tom Benson took over the team in 1985 and he hired Jim Mora as head coach. This proved lucky for the team and they got their first ever winning record and their first playoff appearance. They were unable to win a playoff under Mora though. Jim Haslett was their coach from 2000 to 2005. In 2000 the Saints reached the playoffs and won their first NFC West Title by beating the St. Louis Rams, 31-28. They failed to make it to the playoffs after that under Haslett. In 2006 though, under Coach Sean Peyton, the Saints won their first NFC South Title.
The Saints are one of six teams to never have played in the Super Bowl or any other NFL Championship. They had qualified for the NFC Championship game in 2007 but they lost to the Chicago Bears, 39-14.
Hurricane Katrina
When Hurricane Katrina struck New Orleans, it devastated most of the city including the Saints home field the Louisiana Superdome. The Saints could not play there at all in the 2005 season and had to play their home games temporarily in the Giants Stadium, Tiger Stadium in Baton Rouge and Alamodome in San Antonio. The news spread that the San Antonio officials were trying to convince the Saints to stay there and fans were angered by this attempt to steal the Saints from New Orleans. Several groups in Louisiana had also offered to buy the team from Benson and keep it in the state such as Fox Sports analyst Terry Bradshaw. Benson made it very clear that he was not selling but was going to hand over the team to his granddaughter Rita Benson LeBlanc.
The Saints moved back to the Superdome with the home opener against the Atlanta Falcons on September 25th 2006, which was won by the hosts.
