The Hornets are a member of the Southwest Division in the Western Conference of the National Basketball Association (NBA). They were established in 1988 in Charlotte as the Charlotte Hornets. They moved to New Orleans in 2002. Due to the damage caused by Hurricane Katrina, the team played two seasons in Oklahoma City, from 2005 to 2007.

A Brief History

The NBA announced its decision to add three more teams to its league in 1985. Hearing this entrepreneur George Shinn started making plans to get the team into Charlotte. He made a group of businessmen to head a franchise. In 1987, they got the franchise and started playing in 1988. They were the twenty-fourth team to join the NBA. The team was to be named Charlotte Spirit but after a public contest, the nickname Hornets was chosen instead as it had been the nickname for several other sports teams in Charlotte.

The team started playing their home games at the huge Charlotte Coliseum. After a slow start, they became very popular and at one time they had sold out 358 games in a row which was equivalent to almost nine seasons. Their first head coach was Dick Harter. Their initial roster included mostly veteran players to make the team a competitive one as soon as possible.

The Hornets struggled in their first few years. In 1992, they drafted Alonzo Mourning who along with Larry Johnson and Kendall Gill took the team to their first ever playoffs. They beat the Boston Celtics in the first round but were unable to defeat the experienced NY Knicks.

Many changes in the staff and roster later, the Charlotte Hornets made it back to the playoffs in the 1995 season only to lose again. Their next appearance at the playoffs was in 1999 where they lost to the Philadelphia 76ers. They also lost Bobby Phills who died in a car accident in January 2000. They retired his jersey number the next month.

The Move

Shinn was unhappy with the Coliseum and declared that he would relocate the team if a arena wasn’t built. He contemplated moving the team to St. Louis, Louisville or Memphis. Eventually a arena was promised but only if Shinn sold the team. Shinn moved the team and the NBA promised Charlotte would get a new team.

In 2004, the Hornets hired Byron Scott as head coach after several unsuccessful years under their previous coaches. Hurricane Katrina devastated the city and the team had to temporarily move to Oklahoma City for two seasons. They will continue their home games at home this season.
