Two years later they were renamed the NY Nets and stayed that way till 1977. They were renamed yet again in 1977 and that name is here to stay. The Early Years In The ABAArthur Brown was the first owner of the Nets and he wanted to name the team the NY Freighters as they were supposed to be based in NY. But due to pressure from the Knicks, he had to move the team to NJ and he named them the NJ Americans. The next year, the team moved to Long Island and he named them the NY Nets. The team did not fare too well so Brown sold it to Roy Boe in 1969. Boe signed on Rick Barry immediately after taking over and two years later, the Nets reached the ABA Finals which they lost to the Indiana Pacers. Barry left soon after and the Nets had to rebuild their team. They won two ABA Championships in 1974 and 1976. The MergerIn 1976, following the merger of the ABA and the NBA, the NY Nets became a part of the NBA. They got a jolt when the Knicks made them pay $4.8 million for trying to take over their spot in the NBA. They moved back to Jersey in 1977 and were finally named the New Jersey Nets. They had a few disappointing seasons thereafter. In 1981, the Nets moved to the Brendan Byrne Arena for their home games. They had a few winning seasons after that. They lost their coach Larry Brown in 1983 who took up a coaching job somewhere else. As a result, they lost to the Knicks in the playoffs. The Nets saw many ups and downs over the next decade or so. It was only in 2000 when Rod Thom was hired as team president that the Nets began to show signs of being a great team. Rod made a lot of major changes in the team. He hired Byron Scott to be Head Coach and drafted Kenyon Martin. He then traded Marbury for Jason Kidd which was the boldest and best move he made. The Nets had their best season till date after that. They won their first Atlantic Division title that year. Their first Eastern Conference championship came in 2002 and they reached the NBA Finals as well. They lost the finals to the Los Angeles Lakers. They won their second Conference title in 2003. They have not yet won the NBA championship but are strong contenders for it in the future. New Jersey Nets TicketsGetting New Jersey Nets tickets is tough as they have a huge fan following.
