The National Collegiate Athletic Association in the U.S. It consists of institutions and individuals that organize athletic programs of many colleges. The head office is in Indianapolis and the current president is Myles Brand who was earlier the president of Indiana University.

The National Collegiate Athletic Association organizes many college and university championships in several sports. Some of the popular games are baseball, football, basketball, volleyball, and ice hockey. They even organize tournaments in other games such as lacrosse, golf, fencing and water polo.

The National Collegiate Athletic Association currently awards a total of 88 national championships annually, 44 for women, 41 for men and three for games where men and women compete together. These three are for fencing, skiing and rifle. All the trophies are made of wood with gold, silver and bronze plating for first, second and third positions. From the 1990’s the basketball champions get a trophy sponsored by Siemens along with the regular wooden trophy. Currently the university with the maximum number of Championships is UCLA with a hundred championships. Stanford and Southern California University follow suit.


National Collegiate Athletic Association Awards

The National Collegiate Athletic Association gives out awards to certain players or teams for their performance.

NCAA Award of Valor – not an annual award, it is presented to someone who may have done a heroic act during the academic year.

NCAA Sportsmanship Award – given to a person who has shown one or more qualities of sportsmanship.

NCAA Woman of the Year Award – given to a senior student who has proved herself in sports as well as academics throughout her college years.

NCAA Gerald R. Ford Award – given to a person who has been a leading advocate for college sports, especially intercollegiate tournaments.

Silver Anniversary Awards – awarded to six former student athletes.

The National Collegiate Athletic Association is not the only association in the U.S. which organizes and supports college athletics. There is one more, the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA). There is also such an organization in Canada which is called the Canadian Interuniversity Sport and in Australia known as the Australian University Sport.

The National Collegiate Athletic Association is divided into cabinets and committees, which have people representing all the member colleges and universities. There is a Management Council which presides over the committees. This council in turn reports to the Board of Directors which is headed by the President.

National Collegiate Athletic Association football games began to be televised by the 1980’s which made it popular nationwide. Its popularity grew and the stadiums are usually full for their games.
