The Major League Baseball is an association, which operates two leagues in American Professional baseball, the National League and the American League. The National League consists of sixteen teams and the American League has fourteen. These teams are divided into East, West and Central divisions.

The National League was founded in 1876 and the American League followed twenty-five years later. There is an agreement, earlier known as the NL Constitution, which controls the MLB and all its functions. This agreement has had changes made to it constantly since its inception in 1876. The latest change was made in 2005.

MLB Season

The baseball season begins in April and continues for six months until the beginning of October. The regular season consists of home games that are played in the home city of the teams and away games, also known as games on the road. Each team plays 162 games in a regular season.

There are three rounds of playoffs following the regular season. The first is the Division Series where the division champions from each league face off. The second is the Championship Series where the final teams from each league play to win the league title. The final round is the World Series where the league champions battle for the world title.

The All-Star Game

Around early July, there is a break in the regular season to mark the midway point of the season. The All-Star game is played at this time. The All-Star game is an exhibition game where each team of either league is represented. In the National League team, there is a player from each of its sixteen teams and the team manager is the manager of the previous year’s National League Champions. The same goes for the American League. Fans largely choose the players of each team and so does the manager. Recently the players have won the right to vote on who should be on the team.

There have been 102 World Series played and the New York Yankees have won it 26 times, which is the maximum by any team. The St. Louis Cardinals come a distant second with ten wins. They are also the current reigning World Series Champions.

The MLB has a strict steroid policy. All players have to be tested and a positive report could mean a lifetime ban. There have been several cases of players using steroids to enhance their performance and earlier the MLB did not take the strict stance on the issue that it does now. The result of their previous lax stance on the drugs issue led to baseball being dropped from the Olympics from 2012.
