The Vikings play in the North Division of the National Football Conference in the National Football League. The team was founded in 1961 as an expansion team of the NFL. The team is based in Minneapolis and they first played their home games at the Metropolitan Stadium from 1961 until 1981. After that, their home field has been the Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome from 1982 till date.
The Vikings started by winning their first regular season game against the Chicago Bears on Opening Day 1961. In the late 1960’s the Vikings were building their strong defense, which was to be known as the Purple People Eaters. In 1968 this helped them win their first Central Division Title and reach their first playoff.
The Vikings won the NFL Championship in 1970 by defeating the Cleveland Browns, 27-7. This gave them a place in the Super Bowl that year but they lost the game to the Kansas City Chiefs.
The Vikings’ Tryst With Super Bowl
In the early 1970’s the Purple People Eaters were still in force and helped the team reach the playoffs again. This defense was so good that Alan Page became the first defensive player to be awarded the Most Valuable Player award in 1971. They reached the Super Bowl yet again in 1973 but this time they lost to the Miami Dolphins. They lost the Super Bowl again the next year to the Pittsburgh Steelers. The Vikings reached their fourth Super Bowl in 1977 but they were unable to break their jinx and lost yet again to the Oakland Raiders.
The first game that the Vikings played at the Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome was against the Seattle Seahawks on August 21st 1982, which the Vikings won.
