Based in Minneapolis, the Twins – a Major League Baseball (MLB) team, play in the Central Division of the American League (AL). It was the very first professional baseball team that was named for a state rather than a city. This was something new for the times, as most teams were named for the city they represented. Later, quite a few professional baseball teams followed their lead. The team was named for the twin cities of Minneapolis and St. Paul. Minnesota Twins tickets are selling now for all games of the baseball season.
The Minnesota Twins started, in 1901, as the Washington Nationals/Senators and were originally based in Washington, D.C. Until the time they played in Washington, D.C., from 1901 to 1960, the team was known as, both, the Nationals and the Senators. Even the newspapers of the day interchangeably called them the Nationals or the Senators, even in the same article.
They started playing at the American League Park, and remained there from April 29, 1901 to September 27, 1902, when they moved to the National Park, and remained there from then onwards to 1960. The National Park was renamed the Clark Griffith Park in 1922, in honor of the owner of the team, and then the following year onwards, the Park was known as the Griffith Stadium.
As Washington Nationals/Senators, the present Twins team won three of the six American League titles and one World Series title.
At Minneapolis
The team relocated to Minneapolis in 1961. Originally wanting to name the team the Twin City Twins, the then owner – Calvin Griffith – was persuaded by the governor and other officials of the state to name the team for the whole state. At that time the team had talented players, such as Harmon Killebrew, Bob Allison, Jim Kaat, Earl Battey, and Lenny Green, among others, whom they brought to Minneapolis.
As Minnesota Twins, the team won its first American League Pennant in 1965, though they lost the World Series title the same year to the Los Angeles Dodgers. It, however, took them another 22 years, before they won their first World Series title, as the Minnesota Twins in 1987, beating the St. Louis Cardinals. This, however, was their second World Series title as a team (having won one as the Washington Nationals/Senators), and have won a total of three World Series title.
The Ballparks
After relocating to Minneapolis, the Twins played at the Metropolitan Stadium, in Bloomington, Minneapolis from 1961 to 1981. Their last game at this stadium was played on a rainy afternoon on September 30, 1981, which they lost 5-2 to the Kansas City Royals.
After leaving the Metropolitan Stadium, which was slated to be closed and demolished, the Minnesota twins made the Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome its home park from 1982 onwards. This stadium is simply known as the Metrodome, or the Dome. It is here that the Minnesota Twins won both their World Series titles as the Twins.
