The team are a member of the National Hockey League (NHL). The Walt Disney Company founded the team in 1993. They were named after their film, The Mighty Ducks. They are a part of the Western Conference of the NHL and play in the Pacific Division. In 2003, team made the playoffs again. They faced the Red Wings once more in the first round and defeated them, surprising everyone. They then defeated the Dallas Stars in the semifinals and faced the Minnesota Wild in the Conference Finals. The Ducks defeated the Wild to win their firs ever Conference Championship. They had finally made it to the Stanley Cup Finals. They faced the New Jersey Devils and lost to them after a long hard fight. The Ducks goaltender Jean Sebastian Giguere was awarded the Conn Smythe Trophy for being the Most Valuable Player. He was the fifth player to have won this award being on the losing side.

Paul Kariya and Teemu Selanne left the Ducks and joined the Colorado Avalanche. The Mighty Ducks then acquired Sergei Fedorov and Vaclav Prospal. They failed to make the playoffs in the next season though.

In 2005, the Walt Disney Company sold the team to Henry Samueli and his wife, Susan. In August, Randy Carlyle was hired as head coach. He is the seventh and current coach of the team. Selanne came back into the team and they also acquired Scott Niedermayer. The team also acquired several young players, while trading away some seasoned players. This made a huge difference to the team and they became one of the top NHL teams.

In January 2006, the name of the team was officially changed to the Anaheim Ducks. They beat the Detroit Red Wings to win their second Conference Championship and reached the Stanley Cup Finals. The Anaheim Ducks defeated the Ottawa Senators to win the Stanley Cup for the first time. They are the current defending Stanley Cup Champions. They are the first team from California to win the Stanley Cup. Scott Niedermayer is their current team captain.
