The Clippers started their career as the Buffalo Braves in 1970. They were based in Buffalo and joined the National Basketball Association as a franchise. They moved to San Diego in 1978 and became the San Diego Clippers. They relocated to LA and became the LA Clippers in 1984, and are based there until date. They are a member of the Western Conference of the NBA.
Their Home Arenas
In the beginning, the Clippers played at the Buffalo Memorial Auditorium from 1970 to 1978 as the Buffalo Braves. They played a few games at the Maple Leaf Gardens during the same period. From 1978 to 1984, they played at the San Diego Sports Arena. Once they moved to Los Angeles in 1984, they played their home games at the LA Memorial Sports Arena till 1999. They played some occasional games at the Arrowhead Pond of Anaheim between 1994 and 1999. They moved to the Staples Center in 1999 and have been playing all their home games there since then.
The Clippers have not won any Championship in their career but have always been quite a strong team. They had their ups and downs but have always emerged on top. In the last two years in Buffalo, they did not perform very well and were taken over by Irv Levin, the owner of the Boston Celtics. There was a vote by the NBA owners to determine whether the team should relocate. The team relocated to San Diego in 1978.
Their first season as the San Diego Clippers was a winning one with a record of 43-39. But it wasn’t enough to make the playoffs and it was their last winning season for thirteen years. In 1981, the team was sold to Donald Sterling who relocated the team to LA after three years.
In 1991, Larry Brown was hired as Head Coach and the Clippers made their first playoffs after sixteen years. They were defeated in the first round by the Utah Jazz. The 1993 season was one of the worst as Brown left and Bob Weiss took his place. He was fired the next year and Bill Fitch was hired in his place. Under Fitch, the team made the playoffs again in 1997 but lost to Utah Jazz once more.
