A Major League Baseball (MLB) team based in Missouri, the Royals play in the Central Division of the American League. When after the 1967 season the Athletics moved to Oakland was left without any baseball team. This was the first time it so happened, since 1883, that the city was left without a professional baseball team. MLB, then, awarded Ewing Kauffman, a pharmaceutical executive of Kansas City, one of the four expansion teams. He named the team the Kansas City Royals, with permission to play in 1971 fans began buying Kansas City Royals tickets and heading to the game.

Under pressure, however, from Senator Stuart Symington, MLB allowed the expansion teams to play from 1969. In their inaugural game on April 8, the Royals defeated the Minnesota Twins 4-3. In 1971, the Royals were placed second in the season.

From their beginning in 1969 up to 1972, the Royals played at the Kansas City Municipal Stadium, and on April 10, 1973 moved to the new Royals Stadium, and inaugurated the Stadium with a win over the Texas Rangers. On July 2, 1993, the Royals Stadium was renamed the Kauffman Stadium, in honor of Ewing Kauffman. The Royals are still there, 34 years after they moved in.

The Royals were a successful team, having won three consecutive West Division championship titles in 1976, 1977, and 1978, and at the same time developed strong rivalry with the New York Yankees, having lost three straight American League Championship Series encounters. However, they have two American League pennants under their belt, having won in 1980 and in 1985. The Royals have won a total of six West Division titles and a solitary World Series title, in 1985.

Hall Of Fame Inductees

Four players from the Royals have been inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame:

George Howard Brett (# 5) - Inducted into the baseball Hall of Fame in 1999, and was considered one of the greatest third basemen in MLB history. He spent 20 years with the Royals, from 1973 to 1993.

Orlando Cepeda (# 30) - Inducted into the baseball Hall of Fame in 1999, he played for the Royals in 1974.

Harmon Clayton Killebrew (# 3) - Inducted into the baseball Hall of Fame in 1984, and played for the Royals in 1975. He was famous for his ability to hit home runs. He hit 40 home runs in a season 8 times.

Gaylord Jackson Perry (# 36) - Inducted into the baseball Hall of Fame in 1991. He was a right-handed pitcher, and played for the Royals in 1983.
