When the Colts began their career in the NFL in 1953, they were known as the Baltimore Colts. As the Baltimore Colts, they won three NFL championships as well as the Super Bowl in 1970. They were also the first NFL team to have cheerleaders. Just before the 1984 season, the Baltimore Colts decided to move to Indianapolis which they did much to the anger of their supporters. This was done under the ownership of Robert Irsay.

The Baltimore Colts played their final game on 18th December 1983 against the Houston Oilers. After that the team relocated to Indianapolis and was renamed the Indianapolis Colts. Most of the old Colts players disassociated themselves from the team. Johnny Unitas even asked the Hall of Fame to remove his name from the display unless he was put as being a member of the Baltimore Colts.

When Jim Irsay took over the Colts from his father, he made a number of changes. He fired Coach Lindy Infante and took a new Head Coach Jim E. Mora as well as General Manager Bill Polian. He then drafted quarterback Peyton Manning from the University of Tennessee Volunteers. Manning went on to be the NFL Co-Most Valuable Player (MVP) in 2003 along with Tennessee Titans quarterback Steve McNair. The Colts won the AFC South division title that season.

QB Peyton Manning along with WR Marvin Harrison broke the record for most number of touchdowns between a quarterback and a wide receiver in 2005 with 86 touchdowns. The Colts also have the distinction of being the first NFL team to start two seasons in a row by winning their first nine games. In 2006, they went on to win their fourth consecutive AFC South title by defeating the Cincinnati Bengals 34-16.

Super Bowl 2007

The Colts won Super Bowl XLI on 4th February, 2007. They beat the Chicago Bears 29-17 in Dolphin Stadium in Miami Gardens. This was the first ever Super Bowl played in the rain which made it difficult for both teams. Quarterback Peyton Manning was named the MVP in spite of having a slow start. Tony Dungy became the third person to win the Super Bowl as head coach and a player. He was also the first African-American coach to win the Super Bowl. The Colts are the only AFC South team to have won the Super Bowl.

The Colts have no retired numbers but some players in the Ring of honor are Jim Harborough, Chris Hinton, Robert Irsay, the first owner and Ted Marchibroda, Head Coach 1992-95. The current owner is Jim Irsay and Head Coach is Tony Dungy.
