However, the stadium started hosting various events including ice hockey games only after September 19, 1961. The overall construction cost was $22 million. City of Pittsburgh is the owner of this stadium.

The stadium has the capacity to accommodate 16,958 hockey tickets for Pittsburgh Penguins. However, including the standing room, the number reaches 17,132.

During the initial years, the stadium was popularly known as Pittsburgh Civic Arena. This sports arena continued with the same name during the period 1961–1999. It was only since 1999 that the stadium adopted the name Mellon Arena.

At present, besides the Pittsburgh Penguins (NHL), Mellon Arena is the home stadium for the Pittsburgh Xplosion (CBA) as well. Since its foundation, the stadium has been the home arena for overall eleven teams.
