The founders of the Packers were Curly Lambeau and George Calhoun in 1919. They started it as a semi professional team but in 1921, it turned professional and joined the National Football League. The Packers currently are the only major league sports team in the U.S. which is owned by stockholders and which is a non-profit club.

Co-founder Lambeau took funds from his company for the uniforms for the team. The company was the Indian Packing Company, and they funded the uniforms on condition that the team was to be named after them. Hence, the Green Bay Packers got their name. It is the oldest name still being used by any team in the NFL.

In the 1960’s, the Green Bay Packers were a force to reckon with. Their coach Vince Lombardi took them to great heights. Under him, the Packers won three NFL Championships in a row in 1960, 1961 and 1962. They repeated the feat when they won it again in 1965, 1966 and 1967. They are the only team to have won the NFL title thrice in a row on two occasions.

Vince Lombardi also led them to win two Super Bowls. The first was Super Bowl I in 1966 when they defeated the Kansas City Chiefs, 35-10. The next year was Lombardi’s last year as head coach. That year the Packers won the Super Bowl again, this time against the Oakland Raiders. After Lombardi’s death in 1970, the Super Bowl trophy was named after him in recognition of his achievements.

After the Lombardi era, the Packers were not as successful for the next two decades. In 1995, they won the NFC Central Division Championship after 23 years. Their head coach was then Mike Holmgren and quarterback was Brett Favre. Under Favre they advanced to the Super Bowl in 1996 after a gap of 29 years. They beat the New England Patriots to win their 12th World Championship which is a NFL record. The 1996 Packers were ranked as the sixth greatest team to have played in the Super Bowl. The next year they lost to the Denver Broncos in what was considered one of the biggest upsets in Super Bowl history.

The Packers are a public owned company with a board of directors. Their current head coach is Mike McCarthy and the team colors are Dark Green, Gold and White. They play their home games at the Lambeau Field, which has been their home field since 1957.
