It is not clear who invented the sport, but it is generally accepted that the Scots played a form of the game, and that it existed more than 500 years back. An Act of Parliament by James II of Scotland, dated March 6, 1457, banned the game and football as these games interfered the practice of archery by the royal defenders of the kingdom. However, various games similar to golf existed in the 14th century Holland, Belgium, and France, in addition to Scotland. Golf came to England in 1603, along with James VI, who succeeded to the English throne.
Of course, there were no proper greens as we know today, and the game was played on terrain that was rough, and crude holes were cut on reasonably flat surfaces. Legend – that persists to this day - has it that shepherds near St. Andrews used to hit stones into rabbit holes with their wooden crooks, while tending sheep.
In America
It is not clear when the game made its appearance in America. A Dutch ordinance in 1659 at Fort Orange – now Albany, NY – is the earliest known reference in America. It is believed that the game played, then, was the Dutch version – known as kolven – and not the Scottish form of sport.
Records exist in the port of Leigh showing 96 clubs and 432 balls were imported for delivery in Charleston, S.C., in 1743. An ad for selling “excellent CLUBS” and the “veritable Caledonian BALLS” addressed “To the GOLF PLAYERS . . . ” appeared in a New York paper – Rivington’s Royal Gazette – in 1779.
The South Carolina Golf Club was established in 1786, and the Savannah Golf Club in 1795. However, there is no newspaper account that a match was ever played those days. As the sport was very popular then, it is assumed that people of South Carolina just copied the European names.
Seen as a British game, and the War of 1812 killed the game in America for the next 80 years or so. On Nov. 4, 1873, the Royal Montreal Golf Club was born – the first in North America. A similar golf club in America took another 15 years to be established. The first informal club was the St. Andrews Golf Club – established in November 1888.
The Chicago Golf Club, established in 1893, was the first 18-hole course in America, and the following year, the first national amateur events were held.
Today, the greatest players in the game are from America, and there are more clubs in the United States than in any other country.
