The Stars began their career in the National Hockey League as the Minnesota North Stars in 1967. The North Stars were founded as an expansion team and they played their home games at the Metropolitan Sports Center. In 1981 and 1992, the North Stars reached the Stanley Cup Finals but lost both times. Their team colors were green, gold, black and white. The North Stars won two Conference Championships and two Division Championships.

Move To Dallas

In 1990, due to financial difficulties and poor attendance the team was sold to a group of investors out of which Norman Green took complete ownership soon. In 1993, he moved the team out of Minnesota and took them to Dallas. There he renamed them the Stars. Their new home arena was the Reunion Arena.

In 1994, the Stars made the playoffs where they lost to the Vancouver Canucks. Green then sold the team to Tom Hicks who is the current owner of the team. In 1999, the Stars reached the Stanley Cup Finals against the Buffalo Sabres. The Stars defeated the Sabres to win their first Stanley Cup. In 2000, the Stars made it back to the Stanley Cup Finals but this time they lost to the New Jersey Devils. The next season, the Stars moved to their new home arena, the American Airlines Center.

The Current Stars

The Stars are a member of the Western Conference and play in the Pacific Division. They have won only one Stanley Cup till date. They have also won two Conference Championships and seven Division Championships. These include five Division titles in a row between 1997 and 2001. The team also won the President’s Trophy twice for being the team with the best regular season record.

The 2006-2007 Season

A few changes were made in the team in 2006. Andy Moog the former goalkeeper was made Assistant General Manager. The team acquired Jaroslav Modry and Patrik Stefan from the Atlanta Thrashers. Brendan Morrow was chosen as the team captain taking over the mantle from Mike Modano who was captain since 2003. He is incidentally the only player from the former Minnesota North Stars who is still playing in the team. The team also acquired Ladislav Nagy, Mike Rebeiro and Mattias Nortsrom through separate trades.

In the 2007 NHL All-Star Game, Philippe Boucher and Marty Turco were the players from the Stars in the Western Conference team. In March 2007, Mike Modano reached his 500 goal milestone. He became the second American to achieve the feat. He also broke the record previously made by Joe Mullen for the most goals by an American born player. He scored 503 goals to break the record. They made the playoffs again but lost to the Vancouver Canucks in the first round.
