A major sport in all schools of America. A first ever game that involved a school team in a game occurred on April 8, 1893, when Geneva defeated New Brighton YMCA in Beaver Falls, Pennsylvania. However, February 9, 1895 goes down in the annals of NCAA basketball as the date when the first inter-collegiate game was played between Minnesota State School of Agriculture (now known as the University of Minnesota, St. Paul campus) and Hamline College, the former winning 9-3. Those days, a team had 7 to 9 players. The first inter-collegiate game in the now familiar 5-player format was played between University of Chicago and the University of Iowa on January 18, 1896, the former winning 15-12.

The Progress

Many schools were having basketball teams by the beginning of the 20th century. The National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), then known as the Intercollegiate Athletic Association of the United States (IAAUS), was formed on March 31, 1906, expressly to save football from being abolished. Renamed NCAA in 1910, the first Men’s College Basketball Championship tournament under its aegis was held at Evanston, Illinois in 1939. The same year, the national championship was won by Oregon State, who beat Ohio State – 46 to 33.

The first televised NCAA basketball games took place in 1940 at the Madison Square Garden. These games were Pittsburgh defeating Fordham - 57 to 37, and NYU beating Georgetown - 50 to 27. Since then basketball has become very popular.

The NCAA Men’s Division I Basketball Championship, a single elimination tournament involving all basketball teams in the United States, takes place over 3 weeks at venues across the nation. These most prominent sports events, known as March Madness, draws more than 700,000 fans to the games, and are the most watched events.

Women’s Basketball

After Dr. James Naismith had invented basketball at the YMCA Training School in Springfield Massachusetts in 1891, the physical education teacher – Senda Berenson – of Smith College for girls introduced basketball as a form of physical training, in 1892.

Women’s basketball history was made, when on March 21, 1893, the first collegiate game between the freshman class and the sophomore class was played at Smith College. As it was not socially acceptable at that time, the gym was locked and no men were allowed to watch!

The game became popular across the country, and in April 1896, the first inter-collegiate game was held between Stanford and Berkley. There were 9 players to a side and Stanford bested Berkley 2-1.
