The Cubs, a Major League Baseball (MLB) team that plays in the Central Division of the National League, is based in the North Side Central Lakeview neighborhood of the city. Presently owned by the Tribune Company, the Cubs started its life in professional baseball as the White Stockings in 1870. By 1871, the National Association - the first professional league - was organized.
The ‘Great Chicago Fire’ of October 1871 destroyed the Stockings’ ballpark, its uniforms, and other possessions. However, the team completed its schedules on borrowed uniforms, and finished second. They had to stop playing for the next three years while recovering, and revived in 1874.
The Stockings won the inaugural National League Pennant in 1876. From 1890 to 1897, the Stockings were known as the Chicago Colts, and thereafter as the Orphans from 1898 to 1901. From 1902 onwards, up to today, the team is known as the Chicago Cubs.
The Cubs, since its beginnings in 1870 as the Stockings, played in the Eastern Division until 1993, when the Divisions were re-organized, and the Central Division was created. The Cubs, since 1994, have been playing in the Central Division of the National League.
Major League Titles
The Cubs have won two Eastern Division titles, and one Central Division title. In addition, they have 16 National League pennants under their belt, and only two World Series titles, which they won very early in their career as the Cubs – in 1907 and 1908.
Having failed to win a World Series title since 1908, the Cubs have the dubious distinction of being the only professional team in all of the four major U.S. sports leagues (MLB, NFL, NHL, NBA) to have had the longest dry spell between championships – 98 long years. In addition, they have never been to the World Series since 1945.
The Honors
The Baseball Hall of Fame has inducted 21 players from the Cubs. These players were elected based on their performances with the Cubs. 18 other players, who played with the Cubs at one time or the other in their careers, were also inducted in the Baseball Hall of Fame.
Other than # 42 belonging to Jackie Robinson of the Brooklyn Dodgers, whose jersey number has been retired throughout the Major League Baseball, the Cubs have retired four jersey numbers of their players. These are:
# 10, Ron Santo – Played from 1960 to 1973.
# 14, Ernie Banks – Played from 1953 to 1971, and coached from 1967 to 1973.
# 23, Ryne Sandberg – Played from 1982 to 1994, and from 1996 to 1997.
# 26, Bily Williams – Played from 1959 to 1974.
