The Bulls are a member of the Eastern Conference of the National Basketball Association and were established in 1966. They are based in Illinois and their team colors are Black, Red and White. The Chicago Bulls are the third NBA franchise in the city after the Packers and the Stags. They had an impressive first season record which resulted in the team qualifying for the playoffs.
The Bulls Home Arenas
The Bulls played their first season at the International Amphitheater after which they moved to the Chicago Stadium in 1967. They played all their home games there until 1994 when they moved to the United Center, their present home arena.
A Living Legend
The Bulls will always be associated with one of the greatest players of all time, Michael Jordan. He joined the team in 1984 straight out of the University of North Carolina. His addition to the team raised it to the greatest heights it has ever seen. That year, the Bulls also got a new owner, Jerry Reinsdorf and General Manager Jerry Krause. Under the new management, the team was rebuilt around Jordan who started off his career by setting a number of franchise records. He was awarded the NBA Rookie of the Year.
In 1986, Jordan continued his record streak and was the first Bull to be in the all-NBA first team. In the 1987 season, the Bulls advanced to the Eastern Conference semi-finals but they lost to the Detroit Pistons who went on to win the championship. Jordan was named the Most Valuable Player that year for his superb efforts. It was an award he was to win another four times in his career.
The Bulls efforts were rewarded at last when they beat the Los Angeles Lakers led by Magic Johnson to win the NBA Championship in 1991. This was incidentally the first NBA Final appearance for Jordan and the last for Magic Johnson. The Bulls won the NBA Finals in the next two years as well and Jordan won the NBA Most Valuable Player both times.
In 1993, following his father’s murder, Michael Jordan announced he was retiring from professional basketball. This dismayed his team and his fans. But he made a comeback in 1995 and was still one of the best players in the league. That season he won the All-Star game MVP, the regular season MVP and the NBA Finals MVP, becoming one of the very few to get the elusive “triple crown”. He retired finally in 1998 after seeing the Bulls through two more NBA Final victories.
