The Bears play in the North Division of the National Football Conference (NFC) in the National Football League (NFL). They are the reigning NFC Champions. The club was founded in 1919 in Decatur, Illinois by the A.E. Staley Company as a company team. Officially George Halas is recognized as the founder because he took over the team when it became a charter member of the NFL in 1920.

The team was first known as the Decatur Staleys, named after the founding company. The team moved to Chicago in 1921 and was renamed the Chicago Staleys. In 1922, Halas renamed the team the Chicago Bears which is the name it still goes by. He chose the colors of the team according to the colors of the University of Illinois where he had studied. The university colors were bright orange and blue, but the team’s colors are Navy Blue, Orange and White. The Bears were successful from the beginning. They were NFL Champions in 1921.

The Home Fields

As the Decatur Staleys, the team played their games at the Staley Stadium for a year. When they moved to the city in 1921, they started playing at the Wrigley Stadium which was the field of the Cubs Baseball team. They played there till 1970 and then moved to the Soldier field where they played till 2001. The stadium closed down and after it was completely rebuilt, it reopened in 2003 and the Bears moved back. In the two years in between, the Bears made the Memorial Stadium at Champaign their temporary home ground.

In the years 1940 to 1947, the Bears won four out of five NFL Championships they appeared in under the leadership of quarterback Sid Luckman. One of the most memorable wins was the 1940 game where they defeated the favorites Washington Redskins by an incredible score of 73-0. This was largely due to a new offensive formation developed by George Halas who was their coach at the time. Halas retired as coach in 1967 and he was later made the first President of the National Football Conference.

After George Halas died in 1983, his daughter Virginia McCaskey took over the ownership of the team. She made quite an impact on the team and was even listed as one of Chicago’s most powerful women.

The Bears have had one Super Bowl win in 1985 where they won against the New England Patriots 46-10. They have won a total of eight NFL Championships, four Conference Championships and seventeen Division titles.

The Bears have the maximum number of members in the Pro Football Hall of Fame with twenty-six. They also have the most retired jersey numbers in the NFL with thirteen.
