They spent only one year in Los Angeles and moved to San Diego in 1961. The franchise is currently owned by Alex Spanos with George Pernicano holding a minority share of 3%. The club is a member of the western division of the American Football Conference in the National Football League. The team or Bolts won one AFL title in 1963. They also reached the AFL playoffs five times and the AFL Championship four times before joining the NFL (1970) as part of the AFL-NFL Merger.

With players like Alworth, Paul Lowe, Keith Lincoln and John Hadl, the franchise won divisional crowns in five of the league’s first six seasons and the AFL title in 1963 with a superb 51-10 victory over the Boston Patriots.

In 1969, they defeated the Super Bowl III champion New York Jets with a score of 34-27. In the 1970’s, the team faced a few problems. Many of the potential players either retired or had been traded with. In 1978, they lost to Oakland Raiders with a score of 21-20. The year 1979 also marked a changing point for the franchise as they bagged the first playoff berth with a victory against New Orleans Saints. In the same year, the they also defeated the Denver Broncos 17-7 for their first AFC West division.

In the 1994 they won the first six regular seasons, the only NFL team to do so in 1994 and got to the Super Bowl by defeating the 49ers. The team had eight-straight seasons where they were .500 or worse during the period of 1996 to 2003. In 2004 the team league’s tie-breaking system gave San Diego the number one pick in the 2004 NFL Draft. The league won the AFC West Division Title but was eliminated by New York Jets from the playoffs.

The franchise have five players and one coach enshrined in the Pro Football Hall of Fame in Canton, Ohio: Wide Receiver Lance Alworth, Quarterback Dan Fouts, Head coach/General manager Sid Gillman, Wide Receiver Charlie Joiner, Offensive Lineman Ron Mix and Tight End Kellen Winslow.

The league logo comprises of an arc shaped lighting bolt. The team uniforms comprised of white uniforms during the home games and a darker version for the regular seasons. The color navy Blue is taken as the primary color on the team’s jersey.
