View All Boxing Tickets Some believe that the origin of the sport goes back to ancient Greece and Rome. Some are of the opinion that ‘fighting with fists’ as a sport goes 6000 years back in history to what is now Ethiopia, and from where it traveled to ancient Egypt, ancient Crete and the rest of the Mediterranean, and ancient Greece and Rome. Though some form of boxing existed in ancient Greece, it was not an Olympic sport until 688 B.C., where there were no breaks in the action and the fighters wore leather thongs, to protect their hands and wrists. The sport in ancient Rome was more brutal and gruesome – more of a bloody spectacle than a sport. Similar to gladiatorial fights, slaves were pitted against each other in a fight to the death. Around 30 B.C., it was banned in Rome, and along with the spread of Christianity, disappeared in the rest of Europe. Boxing, however, resurfaced in England in the 17th century, and the Royal Theatre in London regularly scheduled matches in 1698. The Sport In AmericaFights though common on the frontier, the event was not popular. However, two black Americans made their name as boxers in England. One was Bill Richmond of Staten Island, and the other was Tom Molineaux, a slave on a Virginia plantation. It is thought that his fighting skills won him his freedom. Richmond, a servant of Lord Percy – the commander of the British forces in New York – was unbeaten in a number of matches against the British soldiers. Taken to England in 1777, Richmond – known as the Black Terror – knocked out his first English opponent in 25 seconds! He is known to have fought till the age of 52, and lost only one fight when 41, to the British champion Tom Cribb. The first known match in America was between Jacob Hyer and Tom Beasley in 1816, which Hyer won. His son, Tom, beat George McChester – a.k.a. Country McCloskey – on September 9, 1841, and was accepted as the American Heavyweight Champion. When Tom Hyer beat Yankee Sullivan – an English boxer who had come over and beaten all the best American fighters - the sport began to gain popularity. Progress Over The YearsOver the years the sport had progressed and rules were formulated. In 1743, Jack Broughton, known as the “father of English boxing,” drew up the first formal rules for the sport – the Broughton Rules. He also invented the first gloves – known as mufflers – but these were only used in practice to protect the hands and the face. In 1838, the Pugilistic Society in London developed the London Prize Ring Rules. Today, bouts are governed by the Marquis of Queensberry Rules.
