Dr. James Naismith, born in 1861 in Ramsay, Ontario, Canada, invented the game in 1891, when he was at the YMCA Training School in Springfield, Massachusetts, USA. Looking to find a sport suitable for play inside during the winter months, he created the game, to be played indoors in a relatively small area. The very first official game involved the use of a soccer ball and two peach baskets for goals, and was played on January 20, 1892. The court, then, was half the size of the modern day NBA court. From such humble beginnings, the sport has become one of the world’s most popular sports.

YMCA was instrumental in spreading the game, but within 10 years started to discourage it for being too rough and rowdy, and deviating from YMCA’s basic mission. Other amateur sports clubs, colleges, and professional clubs, however, picked up the game quite enthusiastically, and the Intercollegiate Athletic Association (predecessor of the NCAA), and the Amateur Athletic Union sought control over the rules for the game.

Originally starting to play with soccer balls, the first balls made specifically for the game were brown in color. To make the ball more visible to the players and the spectators, the orange ball, still in common use today, was introduced by Tony Hinkle in the late 1950s.

The NBA

Top professional teams were properly organized with the formation of the National Basketball Association (NBA), on June 6, 1946. It was then known as the Basketball Association of America (BAA). The merger of BAA with the National Basketball League (NBL) led to the adoption of the name NBA, in 1949. This led to further popularity of the game. The first NBA game was played in Toronto between the Toronto Huskies and New York Knickerbockers on November 1, 1946, which the ‘Knicks’ won 68-66. Today, the NBA is the most popular and a top professional league.

Originating in 1946 with 11 teams in the BAA, today, the NBA has 30 teams playing in its league, 29 based in the United States, and 1 in Canada. The most successful team has been the Boston Celtics, with 16 NBA Championships, followed by the Los Angeles Lakers with 14 Championships. Currently, the league is divided into two Conferences – the Eastern and the Western - each with three Divisions, and each Division with five teams.

Basketball Tickets Information

Basketball tickets can be procured directly from the many venues where the games are played. Though possible, it is not very easy to stand in long lines for your turn at the ticket windows. Your best option is to arrange to buy your basketball tickets through the services of the licensed ticket brokers.

Legitimate tickets brokers are members of the National Association of Ticket Brokers (NATB), and operate to prescribed work ethics. Most ticket brokers, such as Reedstickets.com, are very courteous and professional in their dealings with their patrons making them come back again and again.

The ticket brokers do charge a little above the face value of the basketball tickets to help cover their costs towards arranging the tickets for you.
