A game which is such a well-entrenched part of the American culture, rich in folklore and history. The earliest mention of the game in the United States was in 1792, at Pittsfield, Massachusetts. In New York, the early reference of “base ball” was found in 1823, and was played at the outskirts of New York City – in what is now Greenwich Village. The first organized team, to play under the modern rules, was the New York Knickerbockers – founded by Alexander Cartwright – the father of modern baseball. This was an amateur club, and laid out the ‘Knickerbocker Rules.’
The first known competitive game between two clubs under the ‘Knickerbocker Rules’ was played between the self-styled “New York Nine” and the New York Knickerbockers on June 19, 1846 at Elysian Fields in Hoboken, New Jersey. The new rules were adopted by the teams in the New York area, and this version of the game came to be called the ‘New York Game’, as opposed to the ‘Massachusetts Game.’
Professional MLB
The National Association of Base Ball Players (NABBP), the first organization governing American baseball and establishing a championship, was formed in 1857, and consisted of 16 clubs from the New York area, including the New York Knickerbockers. In the next 10 years, by 1867, the membership had grown to 400.
During the Civil War, due to soldiers from all over the United States, a more unified verson of the game developed. By 1869, NABBP allowed professional baseball to be played, which up to that point was against the rules. The Cincinnati Red Stockings were the most well known and outstanding professional club of that time.
The National Association of Professional Baseball Players, the first professional baseball league, was formed in 1871. It governed professional baseball and set the playing rules.
The Divisions
1969. This is the year when the American and National Leagues were reorganized into the East and the West divisions. Prior to that year, there were no divisions. Each of the teams topping its own league, and winning its league’s pennant was pitted against the other in the Fall Classic.
The Division Series now requires the winners of each division to play a best of five Championship Series to decide who would represent their respective league in the World Series. The format was changed to the best of seven series in 1985.
With the expansion of the teams, in 1993, a new division – the Central Division was added. In 1995, the Divisional Series added another elimination round to the playoffs. The Major League Baseball (MLB) Series now has two best of five series involving the winners of the three divisions, and a wild card team. The winners of the two series then meet in a best of seven Championship Series – the winner representing its league in the World Series.
